Principal's Message

Welcome to Harlan Community Primary School!  We are a community school that includes the towns of Corley, Defiance, Earling, Harlan, Jacksonville, Panama, Portsmouth, and Westphalia.  The Primary Elementary School has approximately 380 students in grades preschool through second grade. Our class size is typically 20-24 students per classroom.

We are grateful to have a preschool program serving three and four year old students. This is a unique program, which integrates children who have special needs with other students in their age range.

Our focus at the Primary Elementary School is literacy. Our reading and written language programs have been visited by school districts in western Iowa in their attempt to mirror our success with children. In addition to literacy, we have a 75 minute block of time devoted to mathematics.  Our integrated units (science and social studies) are all taught through reading and written language.

We have Title One, which is a supplemental reading program for struggling readers in kindergarten through second grade. We are proud to share that we have Art, Music, Physical Education, Tag, Library and Guidance for our students.

At the Primary Elementary School, we strive to instill a desire for lifelong learners and productive students. As educators, we realize the value of being lifelong learners ourselves. The staff has been highly trained in literacy and mathematics. We’re always looking for ways to further expand what we know about teaching children.

Harlan Primary School is a great place to visit and a wonderful place to pursue lifelong learning. Please stop by and visit anytime!
